The world championship event organised by the IAAF for the longest time is the
IAAF Cross-Country World Championship. On March 19 and 20, 2005, the 33rd IAAF
Cross-Country World Championships will take place in St Etienne - St.
Galmier/France.
Since 1973 the Cross-Championships exist. First winner in 1973 was Pekka
Paivarinta (FIN), Belgium was winning the teams.
In the first years European runners had been the champions and the
winnung-teams were from Europe or USA, but since 1982 runners from Ethiopia or
1986 von Kenya took over the sceptre.
From 1986 till 2003 only Kenya won the team-classification, from 2004 Ethiopia
on was the winner with Kenenisa Bekele - and 2004 Benita Johnson from Australia
won unexpected the femal-race.

Kenya began 1986 the ruling area with John Ngugi. The teams from Kenya won
from 1986 - 2003. Ethiopia with Kenenisa Bekele (he was the winner 2002-2004 on
the short and long distance) won for the first time (after 1981-1985) the
team-classification 2004.
