For the second time in the 30-year history of the BERLIN MARATHON, the German
Agro Action (DWHH) went to the start again as a charity partner in 2003. The
real,- BERLIN MARATHON 2003 was a marathon of superlatives in many ways. Never
before were there so many runners and skaters at Germanys largest marathon as
in 2003. And never before were so many Euros “run in“ for the
drinking water project of the German Agro Action in Butajira, Ethiopia, as in
this year at the real,- BERLIN MARATHON – ca. 45,000 Euros.
The DWHH, the charity partner of the BERLIN MARATHON, was active too, with
its own celebrity relay—with the race number 33225, which was the account
number, as well. The celebrity team included a colourful mix of athletes from
various areas. Tegla Loroupe (KEN), the multiple champion of the BERLIN
MARATHON and former world record holder left the first 10 kilometres quickly
and easily behind her and passed the baton on to Marc Kowalinski, German runner
up this year in the 1500m. He passed on the baton to Joycee Moewius,
triathlete, at the 20km mark, who ran backwards in part, in order to better
show off the Agro Action logo on the back of her t-shirt. Kofi Prah, who was
5th in long jump at the Sydney Olympics three years ago, relieved her. The
final runner starting at the 35km mark was André Niklaus, who was 8th in
the decathlon at this years world championships.
Willi Wülbeck, sponsoring the idea, who is the current German record
holder (1:43:65) and was world champion in the 800m in 1983 in Helsinki
(1:43:65), gave the starting shot for the real,- MINI MARATHON for school-age
youth. Afterwards he was a much sought-after interview partner on the stage in
the finish area at the Brandenburg Gate. The uncomplicated cooperation with the
athletes made it an enjoyable event for all involved, and it is certain to be
repeated in the future. The German Agro Action would like to sincerely thank
everyone who made donations and is very happy that the runners of the
anniversary marathon 2003 demonstrated such open arms (and wallets) for the
poorest people in the world. We will soon be announcing the total amount of the
contributions here. Simone Loose German Agro Action (Deutsche Welthungerhilfe)
