members of the BERLIN MARATHON Jubilee Club (1,067), including the number of

Berlin Marathons in which they have participated. Roland Winterstein became the

1,000th member of the club, as he ran with his wife through the finish...

The Christmas surprise was perfect: at the 4th Berlin “Burn off the

Christmas Goose” Run organised by SCC-RUNNING, Santa Claus (Wolfgang

Paech) arrived with a friendly live goose, who was even named

“Joggy”!

Bernd Hübner invited everyone to join him in his traditional Christmas

holiday recuperation and calorie-burning run through the Grunewald Forest - and

was „overrun“ by participants. 183 runners (last year 95), of which

14 were dressed as Santa, ran their best as three TV...

races at the turn of the year.

You can burn off calories in the Grunewald Forest on the day after

Christmas, on December 26, 2002, at the 4th Berlin "Burn off the Christmas

Goose" Run. Bernd Hübner invites you to join in the ultimate running

recreation in the forest. Santa Claus traditionally joins in the run with a

goose under his arm. We will all jog together for 60 minutes. There will be

Christmas cookies and coffee at the finish...

Three national records in the last six months have helped dispel the reputation

that Constantina Dita built with her crash and burn performance in the world

championship marathon in Edmonton last year. And the Romanian is ready to add

another title to her growing collection in the revamped Singapore Marathon,

sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank on Sunday morning.

At 30k in Edmonton, the Romanian had a two-minute lead on her competitors,

but could only finish tenth, albeit in a personal best of...

The running year 2002 showed an increase in participation for almost all races.

The organisers had to "pull the brake" numerous times and set a limit

so that the races could be properly organised. The enthusiasm for running

continues in Berlin, and the organisers can expect further growth next year for

the well-organised races.

is now the official broadcast series of AIMS, the Association of International

Marathons and Road Races. The joint announcement was made by Hiroaki Chosa,

Marathons, a monthly television series dedicated to the coverage of major

marathons and road race events from around the world, is broadcast in

approximately 80 countries with a reach of 240...

At its annual meeting hosted last weekend in Würzburg (by Residenzlauf

Würzburg), the German Road Races (GRR) council, the association of

road-race organizers in Germany, debate focused on internal issues and the

problems relating to favorably advancing the road-racing circuit in Germany,

Association.

Sonja Oberem is one of the most successful and elegant marathon runners in

Europe. Her success in winning last years ATHENS CLASSIC MARATHON was evident,

but the elegance was not, since due to a monsoon rain, she wore a black plastic

not have been saved by the rescue workers, who were there immediately. This is

the conclusion made by the doctor in charge during the race, Dr. Willi Heepe,

after having received background medical information about the deceased man.

Once again Berlin has proved its reputation as one of the fastest marathons in

the world. For the first time in its history the real,- BERLIN MARATHON saw

three men crossing the finish line sub 2:07:00. The surprise winner was the

23-year-old Raymond Kipkoech from Kenya. He was ahead of four more countrymen

and improved his personal best by 4:05 minutes, clocking 2:06:47. With this

Kenyan men again ruled another world class marathon, when the little known

Raymond Kipkoech beat world silver medallist colleague, Simon Biwott in an

unofficial 2hr 06min 47sec, the ninth fastest in history. Biwott clocked

2.06.49, with another unknown Kenyan, Vincent Kipsos in third in 2.06.53.

Olympic champion Naoko Takahashi of Japan won the Berlin Marathon again this

morning, in an unofficial 2hr 21min 48sec. She was two minutes and two seconds

outside the world record she set in Berlin last year, but nevertheless ran the

13th fastest time in history, and her own third best, just one second behind

her Asian Games winning time of 1998 in Bangkok.

The best strategy for success in a marathon is „even Steven“. The

pace should be constant through the whole race, so that negative splits are

avoided. At least, this is true for reasonably flat courses, since the ups and

downs of some others may neither allow nor recommend an even pace. Berlin,

as a pan.

At the 28th real,-Berlin-Marathon, the Japanese star become the first woman to

run the distance under two hours, 20 minutes - a historic achievement.

The tiny Takahashi ran a world record 2hr 19min 46sec around the streets of

the German capital realising a dream nurtured by two generations of marathon

women. Added to her Olympic title - the first ever for a Japanese (man or

woman) - this made Takahashi the biggest star in a country where the marathon

Eight candidates have expressed an interest in being part of the Golden

League for this period - the six incumbent members Berlin, Brussels, Oslo,

Christian Schenk is ready to fight for a bright future of the ISTAF. The

decathlon Olympic champion from Seoul 1988 was appointed meeting director of

this year’s IAAF Golden League final, which will take place on 6th

September in Berlin.

Following the financial collapse of the ISTAF GmbH, which was in charge for

Germany’s most prestigious athletics meeting for several years, a new

company has been set up immediately. News of the financial difficulties of the

With 15 weeks to go, the 29th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON to be run on 29 September

2002, has already reached its limit number of participants.

A total of 33,000 runners (previous year: 31,690) and 8,000 inline skaters

(2001: 6,105) from 73 nations have entered their names in SCC-RUNNING’s

lists of starters.

With this new record of 41,000 athletes (previous year: 37,795) the 29th

real,- BERLIN-MARATHON will add another highlight to the world of running.

While entries for inline skaters had to be closed some time ago, the number of

runners registered for the race has almost reached the organisation’s

self-imposed limit of 33,000, too. This means that our online entry facility

will be closed very soon now. So use the last chance and register now -

In general, places in this year’s real,- BERLIN-MARATHON will be fully

allocated much earlier than in previous years, since a large number of

international travel agencies have confirmed...

The 1st International Endurance and Sports Medicine Congress in cooperation

with the 29th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON will take place from Sept. 26th –

Sept. 28th, 2002 in the metropolitan Berlin.

Starting in 2002, this congress is supposed to become a major event for

anybody working in the field of endurance sports and sports medicine or

science....

In bright sunshine and 20 degrees. It was a grand experience for both

spectators and participants. Here, elite runners and those running a marathon

for the first time, where represented. Many raised their arms in pride and

relief as they passed the finish line.

The warm temperatures caused the participants to quickly need the fluids and

wet sponges available along ther route. While the spectators could lean back

and enjoy the impressive sight of joyfull and enthusiastic runners...

The turn-out was massive. Nobody had expected an increase of such magnitude in

the number of participants for the 19th AVON RUNNING women’s race

organised by SCC Berlin.

A total of 9,426 runners from 24 nations meant that last year’s

figures were exceeded by far. Despite rainy weather and a simultaneously held

large demonstration which coincided with parts of the course on its way towards

Brandenburger Tor, all of the nearly 10,000 female athletes demonstrated their

own kind of women’s power...

From June 1st 2002 on, no more registrations for Inline skaters for the 29th

real,- BERLIN-MARATHON will be accepted. Limits have been reached.

6.000 inline skaters started in 2001 in Berlin - this year more than 8.000

skaters will be at the start. With this number the 29th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON

for Inline Skaters will be the biggest inline skate marathon in the world.

Previous editions of the race had seen a 6,000 competitor ceiling, which meant

that the entry facility had to be closed very early. Last year, a total of

6,105 athletes started in what was to become the biggest skating marathon

worldwide.

New arrangements with the competent local authorities have made it possible

for skaters to use some additional paved surfaces in the finish area so that

now there is enough space to accommodate a larger number of finishers once they

crossed the line, so as to...

For the first time in its history Berlin’s traditional 25 k race has the

same winners as the year before. The 2001 champions from Kenya, Rodgers Rop and

Magdaline Chemjor, came back and won again. While the recent Boston Marathon

champion Rop decided the race with a strong sprint finish, Magdaline Chemjor

reached the finish line without any opponents near her. In a tactical race the

26-year-old Rodgers Rop clocked 1:15:48, beating Wilson Onsare (Kenya) by just

Entries for the skating competition as part of the 29th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON, on 29 September 2002, are becoming scarce. Due to the high demand for race numbers, potential competitors are advised to speed their registrations: Only 500 race numbers are still available, which is why our online registration site will have to be closed very soon now.

With 6,105 inline skaters at the starting line in 2001, the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON has developed into the biggest skaters’ marathon in the world....

The forecast did not look promising, after the days leading up to the 22nd

Bewag BERLINER HALBMARATHON had seen temperatures constantly dropping. Still on

race day morning, it was icy cold and barely above freezing. But then, the sun

came up and kept on shining through the whole race. Though it still was a bit

on the cold side for the top African runners, a high percentage of competitors

achieved personal bests in near-perfect conditions. Of 14,709 competitors from

be the most important half-marathon competition in Germany.

With more than six months to go until the running of the 29th real,-

BERLIN-MARATHON, on 29 September 2002, the number of places left for inline

skaters is dwindling fast already.

So you better hurry if you want to be in the starting line-up, as only about

2,000 more entries can be accepted now. At this point, more than 4.000 inline

skaters have filed their registration. With last year’s number of inline

skaters in excess of 6,000, the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON has become the biggest

skating...

Already, four weeks before the date of the run on the 7th of April 2002, the

record number of 10,474 entries for the 21.0975 kilometre race, including

runners, skaters, power walkers and wheelchair athletes from over 40 countries,

has arrived at SCC RUNNING, the event’s organisers.

This compares with the 7,342 participants who had registered on the

corresponding day in 2001. Including the usual late entrants, altogether 10,119

took on the super-fast course through the capital city. This year the...

Germany will go ahead with the strongest possible contender: the capital. The

German athletics federation, Deutscher Leichtathletik-Verband (DLV), announced

that Berlin will be the city with which the federation will apply for the

IAAF’s World Championships in 2005. A national selection was necessary as

Stuttgart, the venue of the World Championships in 1993, and Munich, where this

year’s European Championships will take place, also applied for the most

prestigious event in global sports behind...

Nils Schumann is back – though not at his best. His presence was still

enough to enthuse about 2000 spectators before the start of the Teag Indoor

meeting in Schumann’s hometown Erfurt. The Olympic Champions was

celebrated during a lap of honour with pictures of his Sydney race on the

screen. It was his first race in this meeting after his Olympic gold. But at

the end there was not much to celebrate for Nils Schumann, who finished a
